Surrey Counsellor – Tarnia Pickard RCC

Supporting Children, Youth & Families Through Trauma-Informed Counselling and EMDR

With over two decades of experience supporting children, youth, and families, Tarnia brings deep compassion, skill, and understanding to her work as a Registered Clinical Counsellor at Sojourn Counselling and Neurofeedback in Surrey, BC. She is dedicated to helping clients navigate emotional, behavioural, and developmental challenges while fostering resilience, connection, and growth.

A Compassionate, Trauma-Informed Approach

Tarnia’s counselling style is warm, collaborative, and grounded in trauma-informed care. She integrates evidence-based approaches such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Expressive Therapy, and Family Systems Theory.
This integrative approach allows her to tailor therapy to each child or family’s unique needs—supporting healing from trauma, improving emotional regulation, and strengthening relationships.

Helping Children and Families Thrive

Tarnia works with children and adolescents experiencing anxiety, ADHD, autism spectrum differences, emotional regulation difficulties, attachment and relationship challenges, grief, and trauma. She helps parents and caregivers better understand their child’s behaviour and equips families with tools to communicate more effectively and create emotional safety at home.

Her sessions often incorporate creative and play-based methods to help children express themselves naturally and build confidence in their own abilities to cope and grow.

Experience in Education and Community Care

Before joining Sojourn Counselling and Neurofeedback, Tarnia spent many years working within the Surrey School District as both a teacher and counsellor. She also supported youth through community programs focused on mental health, developmental needs, and the justice system.
These experiences give her a deep appreciation for the complex systems influencing a young person’s wellbeing—and the importance of collaboration among families, educators, and counsellors in creating sustainable change.

Guiding Families Toward Healing and Connection

At the heart of Tarnia’s work is a belief that every person has an innate capacity for healing and growth. Whether through EMDR processing, expressive arts, or family-based interventions, she meets each client with empathy, attunement, and respect for their individual story.

She strives to create a therapeutic space where children and families feel seen, supported, and empowered to move forward together.
